Fruit 9 of 9

Temperance / Self-Control

Mastery from within, by the Spirit.

Egkrateia
Temperance / Self-Control (Egkrateia) — fruit of the Spirit

The teaching

Egkrateia means holding oneself in — the ability to say no to appetite so you can say yes to purpose. It touches money, media, appetite, sexuality, speech and time.

This is Spirit-empowered, not willpower alone. It is listed last as the fruit that guards all the others; without it, the rest leak away.

Self-control is trained, not wished for. Every small no builds capacity for the moment when the stakes are high.
