Fruit 1 of 9

Love

The first fruit and the root of all the others.

Agape
Love (Agape) — fruit of the Spirit

The teaching

Agape is not a feeling that rises and falls with circumstance; it is a settled decision to seek the good of another at cost to yourself. It is the love God has toward us in Christ, poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit.

Paul lists love first because every other virtue grows out of it. Joy is love rejoicing, peace is love resting, patience is love enduring, kindness is love serving. Where agape is absent, the rest become performance.

This love is learned in ordinary places — with family, roommates, colleagues and people who cannot repay you. The Spirit does not produce love in theory; He produces it in relationships.
